Magic: The Gathering — Secrets of Strixhaven returns players to the famous magical university of Strixhaven on the plane of Arcavios. The expansion explores the university's secrets, the rivalry between the colleges, and the lives of students and professors in one of the most popular academic settings in the world of Magic: The Gathering.
Strixhaven is divided into five colleges, each representing its own philosophy of magic and color combination: Lorehold, Prismari, Quandrix, Silverquill, and Witherbloom. Players can build decks around these academies and their specific strategies and thematic cards.
The set introduces several new mechanics, such as Prepared, Paradigm, Repartee, Opus, Infusion, and Increment, and also brings back the popular mechanic Flashback. These mechanics reflect the different styles of magic used by the individual colleges.
A special emphasis is also placed on the collectible aspect of the set, as booster packs feature cards from the Mystical Archive, which present classic spells from the history of Magic: The Gathering with new illustrations.
